The fixed bales were soon realised to be too fragile and so were replaced in favour of the swivel bale, which remained standard until the helmet’s withdrawal in the 1980s. Collectors, as they are want to do when they lack the correct term, simply made up what the loops where called and "bail" was the closest thing they could find. Bail is simply a misspelling of the incorrect term bail.
